What Is True Freedom? How to Find It in Christ

Discover what true freedom really means and how to find it in a world full of false liberty. Find biblical insights and lasting hope.

We live in a world that promises freedom on every corner. Freedom to choose, speak, work, identify, and live as we please. Yet, so many still feel trapped: by fear, shame, anxiety, addiction, or the relentless need to perform. If we’re all so free, why do we feel so bound?

Could it be that the freedom we’re chasing isn’t the freedom our souls truly long for?

In the Kingdom of God, true freedom doesn’t come from self-indulgence or independence. It comes from surrender.

False Liberty vs. Lasting Freedom

The world defines freedom as the removal of restrictions. No limits. No rules. Just autonomy.

But Jesus shows us something radically different. In John 8:36, He says: “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” This isn’t temporary relief or emotional hype. It’s deep soul-level deliverance. Real freedom isn’t the absence of boundaries, it’s the presence of Christ.

In Joseph Prince’s teaching on freedom from the spirit of depression, he powerfully unpacks how the lies of the enemy can bind us with hopelessness. But when we allow Jesus to step in, darkness breaks. Chains fall. Joy returns.

“Freedom is not found in escaping problems. It’s found in the presence of the One who overcomes them.”

-Joseph Prince

What Does It Look Like to Be Truly Free?

The Holy Spirit’s presence brings liberty, not restriction. That freedom looks like peace in the midst of chaos, joy that doesn’t depend on circumstances, victory over sin, shame, and fear. He gives you the boldness to be exactly who God created you to be. That’s true freedom! It doesn’t mean you’ll never feel pressure but it means you’ll no longer be a prisoner to it.

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

2 Corinthians 3:17

Steps to Finding True Freedom

If you’re longing to experience this kind of freedom, here are 4 powerful steps to help you walk into it:

1. Recognize What’s Binding You

Whether it’s a habit, a relationship, a mindset, or a secret shame, freedom begins with honesty. Like the man at the Pool of Bethesda in Joyce Meyer’s teaching, you must be willing to ask yourself: Do I want to be made well?

Bring it into the light. Confession is the doorway to breakthrough.

2. Receive the Finished Work of Christ

Freedom isn’t earned; it’s received. It’s already yours through the cross. The enemy’s greatest tactic is convincing you to strive for what Jesus already secured.

You’re no longer under the law or performance-driven religion. You’re under grace. That truth sets you free from the treadmill of “trying harder” and invites you to rest in what He’s already done.

3. Renew Your Mind Daily

Romans 12:2 tells us transformation comes by the renewal of our minds. What you think on determines what you walk in:

Replace lies with truth by declaring you are not a slave to fear, you’re a child of God. You’re not defined by your past, you are made new in Christ and instead of being bound by shame, you are clothed in righteousness. Freedom isn’t a one-time event or a destination, it’s a daily decision.

4. Surrender to the Spirit

True liberty is a byproduct of intimacy with God. When we live led by the Spirit, we walk in victory, not defeat. God wants to rewrite your story and the Holy Spirit is the Author. Give Him your pen. Trust His hand and that He leads you into freedom, step by step.

Final Thoughts: Freedom Has a Name

You don’t need to carry your chains one day longer. You don’t need to prove your worth or fix yourself before stepping into God’s love. Freedom has already been bought for you. His name is Jesus. He doesn’t just want to set you free, He wants you to live free. And living free is a daily choice in a world that wants to entrap us with people’s opinions, sin, fear and shame. So breathe deep. Lay it down and walk boldly into the liberty given to you as a child of God.

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free…”

-Galatians 5:1
