In an age where many of our conversations happen online, we have a unique opportunity to bring discipleship into digital spaces. Just like the early disciples traveled from place to place, sharing the gospel in homes and synagogues, today’s Christians are called to share Jesus in the spaces where people spend their time—whether that’s social media, forums, or messaging apps. But how can we ensure that our digital discipleship is genuine and effective? 

USING THE DIGITAL WORLD TO FOSTER AUTHENTIC CONNECTIONS 

Digital platforms often get a bad reputation for being places where people hide behind screens, but they can also be places where true connections are formed. When discipling through digital spaces, authenticity is key. Share your own experiences—your successes, your failures, and how God has walked with you through each moment. Be real, and others will be encouraged to share their own stories too. 

Jesus made His disciples in relational settings, and that can happen online as well. Look for opportunities to ask deeper questions in your interactions and be an active listener. Create or participate in small online groups where members can discuss Scripture, encourage each other, and pray together. Just as Jesus spent time with His disciples, we too must be intentional with our time, even when it is through digital spaces. 

PRACTICAL STEPS FOR DIGITAL DISCIPLESHIP 

Whether you are leading a group or simply encouraging a friend, remember that discipleship isn’t about information; it’s about transformation. Start by offering genuine encouragement, praying for others’ needs, and leading conversations that point people to Jesus. Use technology to its fullest—share devotionals, create video calls for Bible studies, or send an uplifting Scripture to someone who needs it.
