CAN BELIEF IN GOD AND SCIENCE COEXIST?
Discover how belief in God and science can coexist. Explore biblical insights, scientific discoveries that affirm God’s existence, and how Christians can embrace both faith and reason.
ARE FAITH IN GOD AND SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY TRULY AT ODDS?
One prevalent misconception is that faith and science cannot coexist. The belief that Christianity and scientific discovery are forever at odds. But history shows a different story. Some of the greatest scientists — Isaac Newton, Johannes Kepler, and Louis Pasteur — were devout believers who viewed science as a means of understanding God’s creation.
“For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible.” (Colossians 1:16) God is not discredited by science but rather reveals the intricate workings of His creation through it.
BIBLICAL EVIDENCE FOR SCIENCE AND DISCOVERY
Science and Scripture are not at war, in fact they often complement each other. It is important to note that the Bible is not a scientific textbook, but it is does contain profound truths that are not actually confirmed by modern findings. Here are some examples:

• The Expanding Universe-Isaiah 40:22 states that God stretches out the heavens, a concept modern astronomy verifies in the expanding universe.
• Suspended Earth in Space –-Job 26:7 “He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing.” This is consistent with what we now understand about the Earth’s location in space.
• Hydrological Cycle – Ecclesiastes 1:7 describes the process of evaporation and rainfall; mirroring today’s scientific discovery of the water cycle.
WHEN SCIENCE POINTS TO GOD
Many scientific discoveries affirm the complexity and order of creation, making belief in God even more reasonable. Here are a few key examples:
a) The Fine-Tuning of the Universe
Scientists have found that the universe is perfectly fine-tuned for life. If gravitational forces, oxygen levels, or planetary distances were slightly off, life would not be possible. This level of precision suggests an intelligent designer. Psalm 19:1 declares,
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
b) DNA: The Signature of God
DNA contains complex, coded information, much like a computer program. Bill Gates once said, “DNA is like a computer program but far, far more advanced than any software ever created.”
This intricate design suggests an intelligent Creator, rather than random chance.
DEBUNKING THE MYTH OF SCIENCE DISPROVING GOD
Others insist science has rebutted the notion of God, but this is not possible. Evolution and the Big Bang only theorize on how the universe works, not that it doesn’t have a Creator.
As Romans 1:20 reminds us, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made.”
Scientific theories can attempt to explain how the universe works, but they can’t answer the question of why the universe exists.
HOW SHOULD CHRISTIANS APPROACH SCIENCE?
Christians can dabble in science, while holding fast to their faith. Here’s how:
1 Stay informed –Listen to Christian scientists, apologists and theologians discuss the interplay between faith and reason.
2 Don’t be afraid to question -Faith is not blind. God encourages us to ask for wisdom (James 1:5).
3 Trust God’s word -Bible is unchanged through time. The measure of any new discovery should be held up against Scripture.
FAMOUS SCIENTISTS WHO BELIEVED IN GOD
In history, there have been many brilliant minds who welcomed both science and faith:
Isaac Newton – Discovered gravity wrote copiously on biblical prophecy.
Johannes Kepler – The father of astronomy who declared, “Science is thinking God’s thoughts after Him.”
Francis Collins – Leader of Human Genome Project and avowed Christian, “The God of the Bible is also the God of the genome.”
And if these great scientists were able to reconcile their faith as spiritual leaders with great scientists, so can we.

GOD, SCIENCE, AND THE FUTURE
As science advances, it continues to point back to a Creator. The more we uncover about the universe, the more we see evidence of God’s design.
Jeremiah 33:3 encourages us: “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Science helps us uncover the mysteries of God’s creation, drawing us closer to Him.
CONCLUSION: FAITH AND SCIENCE CAN COEXIST
The bottom line is that faith is compatible with science and even helps the believing mind understand the marvellous design and order of God’s creation. And when we contemplate the cosmos, DNA, and the laws of physics, we see the fingerprints of a Creator.
Scientists need not lose their faith, and Christians can remain steadfast in their faith while embracing science because we know that all truth leads back to God.
So, can belief in God and science coexist? Absolutely. Indeed, upon close inspection, science tends to confirm our faith rather than undermine it.
