How can we explain light-years in view of an earth that is not billions of years old?

From a literal reading of Genesis, the universe appears to be around six thousand years old. But we know that some stars are millions of light years away from Earth. This leads to many people questioning the Bible’s time-scale, assuming it is impossible for such light to reach Earth within these few thousand years, allowing us to view these stars in the night sky as we do.
