Hydro-Electric Community Propject - Zambia

The medical team of a one-hundred-year-old hospital in north-western Zambia performed their first-ever operation under general anaesthetic in 2007. Landmark achievements like this are made possible by the Zambezi Rapids Hydro Scheme - officially opened on 14 July 2007. Now boasting a reliable supply of electricity 24-hours-a-day, Kalene hospital is performing around 1000 surgical procedures and delivering 900-1000 babies each year.

With the national power grid reaching its end nearly 400km away, the basic supply of electricity has not been an option outside of unreliable and expensive sources such as diesel generators. But now through harnessing the power of these large rivers, the hydro-electric power unit provides sustainable electricity. This in turn means that the local community is no longer dependent on diesel and fuel imported from South Africa.

Zambia ThumbnailThe difference this is already making to the local hospital, schools, the orphanage and clinics is profound. Employment developing directly from this project (as well as indirectly due to development and expansion of Small and Medium Enterprises) will decrease poverty and dependency on charitable giving - making the local population more self-reliant.
GOD TV has supported and partnered with various role players in making this project a reality by donating much needed finances. One of the professionals who worked on the project commented, "Seeing the water flowing over the weir, down the canal and through the turbine, and the lights coming on... it was amazing!"

Looking to the future, the Zambezi Rapids Hydro Scheme plans to extend the power-line to other nearby institutions to assist them in the same way, thus spreading opportunities to further develop Small and Medium Enterprises and create opportunities for wealth creation in the surrounding areas.
